Organization History

 1936

  • Filipino Club founded by T. Niedo, M. Vera Cruz, R. Barnachea, M. Obien, and M.V. Nillo with the mission to cultivate college spirit, promote closer contact among Filipino students in Seattle College, take part in civic affairs whenever possible, and develop within themselves the Christian habit of mutual cooperation and love.

 1947

  •  Pinoy Club hosts first fiesta with a special guest appearance by Miss Philippines.

1950

  • Pinoy Club wins two awards for Seattle University homecoming celebrations– the first Pinoy group to ever take high honors in a university homecoming competition on the West Coast.

1954

  • Seattle University Pinoy Club instigates the formation of the Philippine United Filipino Organization (PUSO) with the University of Washington Filunist Club.

 1971

  • Kapatiran, a union for Filipino students forms with hopes to expand to other Asian students.

  • The Filipino-American Brotherhood of Seattle University recruits local area Filipino high school seniors and promotes participation in the Filipino community’s blood drive.

 1995

  • United Filipino Club hosts its first annual Barrio Fiesta.

 1999

  • Barrio Fiesta breaks attendance record of 500.

 2005

  • United Filipino Club hosts three large events: FASA Jam, Barrio Fiesta, and the 2005 NWFASA Conference, “Educate. Reflect. Act” (E.R.A). 

2007

  • Seattle University Alumni Relations establishes the Filipino Alumni Chapter (FAC).

2008

  • United Filipino Club, in collaboration with the University of Washington’s Filipino American Student Association (UWFASA), hosts FASA Jam featuring the Basco Brothers.

  • United Filipino Club, along with other Seattle-based Filipino-Interest Organizations, co-sponsors a recorded concert for Rex Navarette.


Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does “UFC” stand for?

            A: United Filipino Club. Not to be confused with the Ultimate Fighting Champion.

Q: What do you do?

            A: We hold various general meetings and events promoting Filipino heritage, community service, and social opportunities. These are proposed by officers, members, and the outside community. 

Q: When and where are general meetings?

            A: Every other Tuesday, at 7 p.m., usually in Student Center 210.

Q: Is it just for Filipinos?

            A: UFC is not exclusively for Filipinos. We encourage participation from anyone interested in learning more about the Filipino culture and traditions.

Q: What does it take to be a member?

            A: Members must be a registered undergraduate or graduate at Seattle University or a neighboring institution. They may be faculty or staff at Seattle University, or alumni from Seattle University or another neighboring institution who maintained active standing with UFC. General members attend events, activities, and general meetings held by the officers of  UFC, while official members have also paid dues determined by the current treasurer.

Q: What are the benefits of being an official member?

            A: Official members are given priority over general members in attending certain events with a limited capacity such as they annual camping trip. They also receive discounts to attend UFC-related events as well as discounts on apparel and the right to vote in annual officer elections.

Q: Why should I join the club?

            A: UFC strives to create a sense of family, bring meaning to one’s identity as Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, increase knowledge of Filipino culture and tradition, serve the community, and develop leadership skills to educate oneself beyond the academic experience to instill positive change in the greater community.
