   About NSBE

The History

In 1971, six close-knit group of students at Purdue University, who called themselves "the Chicago Six," decided to form an organization to provide support for Black engineering students and help them succeed in the engineering discipline. With the help of the only Black faculty member at Purdue during that time, these six young men were provided with the encouragement and direction needed to succeed in engineering, and formed the Society of Black Engineers (SBE). They decided to extend their vision and purpose to other schools across the nation, and in 1974, SBE became the National Society of Black Engineers.

NSBE was founded as an organization which promotes recruitment, retention, and successful graduation of minorities in engineering -- missions and goals which still hold true today. In 1978, NSBE grew from 5 official chapters to 88 nationwide. Today, NSBE's membership exceeds 10,000 students and alumni in over 180 chapters.

MISSION

NSBE's mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

NSBE is comprised of more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide and 75 Pre-College chapters. These chapters are geographically divided into six regions.

NSBE had its genesis at a national conference planned and hosted by the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April 1975. Black Engineering students from the United States and Canada attended the event. From this meeting of concerned students and educators, NSBE was born. In 1976, NSBE was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the State of Texas. NSBE also became recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
