Equipment Checklist: Winter Camping

Ready for Camp Siberia!

1. Basic Essentials (all climbers)
__ sleeping bag suitable for snow camp
__ backpack (large capacity: 5,000-7,000 cu. in.)
__ blue foam or thermarest pads (two are necessary when we'll be camped on snow)
__ emergency shelter or bivy sack
__ sunglasses (adequate for bright snow conditions)
__ goggles (wind, snow protection)
__ sunscreen & lip balm (SPF 20+)
__ pocket knife
__ personal first aid kit (small)
__ toilet paper in ziplock bag
__ water bottles (2 quarts minimum)
__ spoon, bowl, insulated cup
2. Party Gear (TBA):
__ tents
__ stoves & cooking gear
__ fuel bottles
__ snow shovels
__ snow saw
3. Clothing
__ fleece or wool pants
__ fleece jacket or wool sweater
__ synthetic longjohn bottoms

__ nylon shorts
__ rain gear (jacket & pants, poncho is not adequate)
__ fleece or wool hat, or balaclava
__ heavy wool or wool/poly socks (two pairs)
__ liner socks (two pairs)
__ gaiters
__ wool or poly glove liners (2 or 3)
__ insulated mitts
__ down vest or parka, if you've got it
__ beanie w/ propeller (in case of eruption)
__mukluks or down booties for midnight dashes (seriously!)
4. Personal Climbing Gear (all climbers):
__ head lamp with spare bulb & batteries
5. Miscellaneous:
__ large plastic garbage bags (2)
__ camera/film
__ matches or lighter
__ personal medications (aspirin, bendril, salt tabs)
__ paperback book in case we're weathered in
__Pee bottle (with tight-fitting lid!)
6. Food: More later...
Each climber is responsible for his/her own food. We will boil water for morning & evening meals. Plan for one breakfast, two lunches and two suppers. About one third of your total weight of food should be high energy snack type items that are consumable while you are underway (candy, granola bars, fig newtons, nuts, gorp etc.) Call your exalted leader for food suggestions. Evening meals should result in your consuming lots of fluid and salt.
