"Taking it one step at a time since
1939"
Club Name &
Origin:
The Club was founded at Seattle College in 1939, by Fr.
Frank Logan, S.J. (95 years old!), now retired and a resident of Arupe House.
The Club's name, the
"Hiyu Coulee" hiking club, was taken from Siwash
jargon meaning "much walking." From its orgin in 1939 into the 1970's, being a
Hiyu was the highlight of hundreds of students' college years. A taste of these
early years of the club's history are evident in the
Photo
Album.
Purpose of
Club:
To promote interest in, provide opportunities for, and
enhance the enjoyment of hiking and related foot travel in the Pacific
Northwest.
Membership:
Participation is open to all members of the Seattle
University community, including, students, staff, faculty, administrators,
alumni, family and friends. All you have to do is e-mail
makinse@seattleu.edu
asking to be added
to the mailing list.
Scope of
Activities
Scheduled
Trips
The emphasis is on day hikes and weekend trips within a 100 mile radius of
Seattle. The planning committee will endeavor to schedule 1-2 such trips
each month during the academic year (September - June). In order to continue the
club's activities through the wintertime, "hiking" is assumed to include such
related leg-powered activities as snow shoeing, backpacking, snow camping etc.
Please refer to the
club
calendar for events planed for this year.
A Resource for the
University
The Hiyu Coulee Hiking Club serves as a resource for
outdoor trip-planning by members of the University Community. It maintains a
library of current hiking trail, climbing and cross-country ski trail guides, as
well as some maps and general information of use to outdoors people. Individuals
are welcome to use these "in house" by simply contacting Mr. Keough in Student
Financial Services office.
