CultureJammers has done several fun-filled events since it began in Winter 2005. To get a better understand of what kind of events we do as a club, please read through these brief description of past events.
- The Inaguration Day Walkout (aka J-20 Walkout): This was the SU Student Walkout held on Janurary 20th, 2005, where about 30 of our students walked out of classes to attend the No Business As Usual Convergence at Westlake Park. No Business As Usual was sponsored by a group called Not In Our Name, a group that opposes the Iraq War, the round-up of immigrants, and other issues currently plauging our nation (check out the "About NION" section of their website for more information). SU students met at 11:30 AM at the Quad to hear three speakers, sponsored by SU's CGC (Coalition for Global Concern). At 12:30 PM, the gathered SU students marched out of the Campus and down Broadway, where we converged with other student groups at SCCC (Seattle Central COmmunity College). Around 2PM all of the students gathered at SCCC marched downtown to Westlake Park, where we met up with No Business As Usual COnvergence. Speakers, bands, and theatre performed on the main stage set up at the park until 4:30PM, when all 2,000 people at the rally marched down to the Federal Building to join the ANSWER rally. All rallies officially ended at 6:30PM, although crowds were still large downtown and at the Federal Bulding until later in the evening. Photographs from the rally can be found here. - Valentine's Day Gay Marriage Protest: On Valentine's Day, members of CJ, along with a few members of Triangle Club, CGC, and SU's Amnesty International chapter wore wedding accessories to classes. For most, these accessories included veils (created at a CJ meeting) and shirts, silkscreened by CJ member Kristin, which read, "Love Knows No Gender". In addition, participants of the protest handed out pamphlets regarding the issue to other interested students.
- T-Shirt Fundraiser: We had quite a few people asking CJ members where they could buy the "Love Knows No Gender" shirts from our Valentine's Day event. So, we decided to sell them! We sold t-shirts with other mottos as well, including "Subvert the Dominant Paradigm" (the CJ slogan), and the crowd favorite "This space not available for advertising".
- The Unfashion Show: was an expose of the fashion industry in America while at the same time giving the American people hope that there are organic/eco/labor friendly clothing options available to them. The show began with CJ members dressed in wild clothes and outrageous hair and makeup imitating models on the runways of Paris and Milan. We then had an "activist takeover", where members stopped the show and "took it over". After an intermission and an explanation of the social and ecological damages of many clothing corporations, we had our eco-friendly and sweatshop-free fashion show, featuring many Seattle-area vendors.
