Article I - Name
Section 1:
The name of this organization shall be Seattle University Criminal Justice Club, hereinafter referred to as the CJ Club.
Section 2 :
Any proceeds made through fund-raisers and/or donations shall not benefit any private individual, with the exception of reimbursements.
Article II - Goals
The goals of the CJ Club shall be to honor moral and ethical values; encourage leadership; educate students and the public about today’s criminal justice system, and provide learning opportunities in the areas of corrections, law enforcement, and Criminal Law.
Article III - Members
Section 1:
Members shall be full-time or part-time undergraduate students enrolled at Seattle University.
Section 2:
Membership in the CJ Club is open to all Seattle University students without regard to age, color, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and/or disability. The Seattle University Criminal Justice Club acknowledges diversity and complies with the guidelines found in the Seattle University Student Handbook.
Section 3:
Privileges of membership. Only honorary members of good standing shall have the right to hold office. All active members will have priority in the planning of CJ Club activities, such as special guest speakers and trips to criminal justice agencies.
Section 4:
The amount of dues, fees or assessments for any type of membership in the CJ Club shall be established by the CJ Club membership.
Article IV – CJ Club Officers
Section 1:
The officers of the CJ Club shall be the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Fundraiser Coordinator. The CJ Club Officers shall have general supervision of the CJ Club between meetings, including full power to conduct all business of the CJ Club. The duties of the Officers shall include: appointments to fill vacant positions; oversee of all members entrusted with property, real, or personal belonging to the CJ Club; review minutes of the CJ Club meetings; adopt rules and regulations for the handling of the affairs of the CJ Club and perform any other duties that are required by the Seattle University Student Handbook policies regarding student organizations.Section 3: Qualifications
The qualifications for officers during the term of office shall be:
1. Enrolled at Seattle University.
2. Expected to be a role model of both moral and ethical values.
Section 4: Officers Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of the President shall be to:
1. Act as officer of the CJ Club to uphold the bylaws of the
CJ Club as well as those set forth by Seattle University.
2. Lead all CJ Club meetings, or delegate the leadership to another CJ Club officer.
3. Promote and encourage all activities which support and further the objectives of the CJ Club.
4. Advertise and attract new members to CJ Club activities.
5. Coordinate all CJ Club business, including elections and introductory meetings in the fall.
7. Participate regularly in CJ Club activities and events.
8. Oversee the duties of the CJ Club officers, and assist them in performing
assigned duties including final decisions when needed.
9. Keep unity and provide structure. Work on group problem-solving with other officers and club members.
10. Liaison between club and club advisor.
The duties of the Vice President shall be to:
1. Abide by and uphold the bylaws of the CJ Club as well as those set forth by Seattle University.
2. Conduct meetings in the president’s absence & attend CJ Club meetings.
3. Be an understudy for all general tasks of the club officers, and insure that officers stay on task.
4. Assist with all major processes, such as elections, policy making, and all CJ Club decisions.
5. Develop a list of organization where club members could volunteer; schedule community service project; recruit other members to participate; advertise; establish relationship between the club and community.
The duties of the Secretary/Treasure shall be to:
1. Abide by and uphold the bylaws of the CJ Club as well as those set forth by Seattle University.
2. Attend CJ Club meetings and take and maintain minutes at all CJ Club meetings and executive meetings.
3. Maintain a CJ Club membership list.
4. Update the CJ Club calendar regarding upcoming meetings and activities.
5. Keep all material sent to the CJ Club updated and recycles all material out dated.
6. Compose all necessary correspondence. Sends an information packet to all
scheduled speakers and guests, and sends thank you cards to speakers, guests
and any individual and/or company who donate to the CJ Club.
7. Advertise all CJ Club meetings and events (i.e. flyers, school newspaper, local newspaper, JPR, etc).
8. Orient the successor to these duties. Reserve rooms for CJ Club meetings and all other CJ Club activities.
9. Keep a set of books for the CJ Club and presents a summary of the club
finances at the end of each term or upon request of the president and/or faculty advisor(s).
10. Collect all dues, fees or other money paid to the CJ Club.
11. Make deposits/ withdraws to and from the CJ Club account.
The duties of the Fundraiser Coordinator shall be to:1. Abide by and uphold the bylaws of the CJ Club as well as those set forth by Seattle University
2. Organize and construct club fundraisers
3. Generate ideas for fundraising
4. Establish fundraising goals
5. Establish fundraiser contacts
6. Seek club sponsors
The duties of the Advisor(s) shall be to:
1. Abide by and uphold the bylaws of the CJ Club as well as those set forth by Seattle University. 2. Serve as a counselor/ mentor to the officers of the CJ Club .
3. Support the CJ Club.
4. Facilitate conflict resolution. Help deal with crises as they arise.
5. Give honest feedback about decisions, ideas, and activities.
6. Serve as a liaison to Seattle University, when needed.
7. Provide long term continuity, guidance, and stability.
8. Advise the CJ Club on decisions, policies and procedures.
9. Maintains a link with criminal justices agencies.Article V - Elections
Section 1:
Regular Elections shall take place annually during the last meeting in May. Elections shall be announced at each of the preceding regular meetings during spring term. New officers shall assume office beginning June 11, 2006.
Section 2:
Voting rights are restricted to members of the CJ Club. Only honorary members are allowed to run for office (honorary members must attend 5 out of the 9 meetings offered each year and at least 2 CJ Club event or seminar).Article VI- Probation and Impeachment
Section 1:
A CJ Club officer shall receive probation which can result in permanent suspension of office for any of the following reasons:
1. The CJ Club officer is charged with insubordination (ie. disrespecting fellow
officers and/or faculty advisers, breaking the chain of command, inconsistent with
esprit de corps)
3. Any act of discrimination as defined by Seattle University Policy.
4. Any situation/ circumstance the CJ Club or CJ Club advisor(s) deems
inappropriate.
5. An officer fails to perform his/hers duties satisfactorily.
6. Any criminal charges or convictions for crimes against persons or crimes of
deception.
Section 2:
Impeachment proceedings against an officer shall be reviewed and may be initiated upon presentation to the Criminal Justice Faculty.
A petition for impeachment must contain the signatures of at least 2/3 of the members present at the regular meeting. At the next regular meeting the impeachment proceedings shall be announced and will take place within one week. Impeachment shall be carried if approved by a two-thirds vote of the members present at the impeachment meeting. Should the President be the officer subject to impeachment, that meeting shall be chaired by the Secretary and a faculty adviser.
Article VII- Purchases and Expenditures
Section 1:
No item or items shall be purchased without prior approval from the president.
Section 2:
All expenses for advertising, promotion, trips , etc. shall have prior approval from the president.
Section 3:
No purchase or expenditure shall be reimbursed without an original receipt.
Article VIII - By-laws
Section 1:
By-laws may be passed for the purpose of clarifying the interpretation of the Seattle University’s Criminal Justice Club’s constitution. They may be passed or amended by a 2/3 vote of the membership present at a regular meeting.
Article IX - Amendments
Section 1:
Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any member in honorary standing at a regular meeting of the CJ Club. This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the membership of the CJ Club present at the amending meeting. A petition must contain the signatures of at least as two-thirds of the members as would be present at a regular meeting to bring a proposed amendment forward at a meeting. The amendment must be read at a minimum of two consecutive regular meetings, voting taking place at the second meeting.
Section 2:
Written notice of the amending meeting must be posted electronically; made available for the entire club to examine. If approved, the amendment(s) will take effect the first day of the following calendar month.
